Norfolk Schools Leading the Way in Renewable Energy
Across Norfolk, schools are facing the challenges of rising energy costs and ambitious sustainability targets. By embracing solar PV and EV charging, local schools are not only reducing their running costs but also setting a powerful example to pupils and the wider community about the importance of renewable energy.
Over the past year, we've partnered with five schools across the county to install solar panels and EV chargers, delivering both immediate savings and long-term environmental benefits. Together, these projects show what’s possible when schools take a proactive step towards clean energy.
School Snapshots
Bacton Primary School
Installed a 33.67 kWp solar PV system alongside two Rolec EV chargers. The panels are expected to generate around 31,000 kWh of electricity each year, meeting nearly a third of the school’s demand and cutting carbon emissions by 6 tonnes annually.
Mundesley Primary School
Fitted a larger 44 kWp solar PV system with two Rolec EV chargers, producing around 33,600 kWh a year. This helps the school cover much of its daytime use while saving around 10 tonnes of CO₂ every year.
Freethorpe Primary School
Now powered by a 48 kWp solar PV system with 108 panels, Freethorpe generates around 45,600 kWh annually, cutting carbon emissions by more than 13 tonnes per year.
Swanton Abbott Primary School
Equipped with a 36 kWp solar PV system and two Rolec EV chargers, Swanton Abbott produces around 34,600 kWh annually, reducing CO₂ emissions by around 10 tonnes per year.
Horning Primary School
Installed a 27 kWp solar PV system with two Rolec EV chargers, generating around 25,000 kWh annually and cutting emissions by about 7.3 tonnes each year.
Shared Results
Taken together, these five schools are now producing around 170,000 kWh of renewable electricity every year, the equivalent of powering around 60 average UK homes. They are also avoiding more than 46 tonnes of CO₂ annually, a clear contribution to Norfolk’s sustainability goals.
Beyond the numbers, the installations are helping schools take control of their energy bills and giving pupils a daily, practical lesson in the importance of clean energy. With EV charging points on-site, staff and visitors can also benefit directly from the switch to renewables.
Norfolk schools are showing what’s possible when education and sustainability go hand in hand. By investing in solar power and EV charging, they’re lowering costs, cutting carbon, and inspiring the next generation to think differently about energy.
